Formula Student
Formula Student is a competition where student teams design and build their own racing cars from scratch.
In the beginning of 2017 Aalto Formula Team club was founded. The goal of the club is to participate in Formula Student competition with our own electric racing car. I happened to hear about the project from our professor Eero Miettinen and decided to join the club. For the past couple of years I have been involved in numerous different activities in Aalto Formula Team. In the beginning my role was to design our logo, design concept, PowerPoint's for fund raising. During designing phase I took part in designing the bodywork and air intake. Torwards the end of 2019 I started helping with manufacturing the vehicle. I have now welded the chassis and manufactured multiple parts for our powertrain and suspension.
Currently (February, 2020) I'm in charge of the manufacturing and work as a secretary of our club. Our formula will be ready to be assembled in the end of February 2020 and after that I will transition back to work more with Media. During the spring I will be creating a simple VR demo of our vehicle to attract more members and industry partners.
Unreleased teaser animation of our first Formula Student race car AFT2020 made in Unreal Engine 4. The video features our finalized car design still without our partner's logos in the bodywork.
Design Concept
The concept images represent the original vision of what the car be like. During designing the bodywork multiple compromises were made in order to manufacture it more cost efficiently and fit to the final assembly. Originally the plan was to have a rear wheel drive vehicle, where the Battery, Powertrain and Inverters are all located behind the driver.

Design
The CAD design was made in Siemens NX. I designed some early versions of our bodywork which got us discussing about aerodynamics, cooling our inverters and motors. The final bodywork modeled together with Joan Alboy was designed to have way more surfaces that could be manufactured from straight sheet of carbon fiber or glass fiber to save money on mould costs.

Manufacturing
Nearly everything in the car is built by students. Building a Formula Student type race car from scratch takes a lot of work and resources. Hopefully many of our industry partners have helped us by providing components, training and expertise.
Currently our partners are Patria Aero structures, ABB, B&R Automation, Aalto-Univesity, Dell, SKF, SSAB, Ideal PLM, Bender, Powerfinn, Eaton, Beneq
